5 Questions to Ask Before You Bring a Rescue Dog Home
From the 3-3-3 rule to the first week of meals, here is how to set a new dog up for success.

Adopting a dog is one of the best days of your life, and a little planning makes it a great day for the dog too. These five questions will help you prepare.
1. Does my lifestyle fit this dog?
Think about space, schedule and how much time you have for walks, play and training. Apartment living is fine if you can meet that particular dog’s needs. Be upfront with the shelter about kids, other pets and your routine.
2. How do I help them settle?
Use the 3-3-3 guide: the first three days can be shy and sleepy, by three weeks routines start to stick, and by three months many dogs feel truly at home. Let the dog set the pace.
3. What should they eat at first?
Ask the shelter what, how much and how often the dog is fed, and keep that going for the first week. Switch foods gradually if you need to.
4. What routine works?
Regular times for meals, walks, rest and play build confidence. Add short, reward-based training once your dog is comfortable, and expect a few wobbles along the way.
5. Where can I get help?
Your shelter, your vet and qualified behavior professionals are all there for you. Ask early and ask often.
