Thinking of Adopting a Cat? Ask These 4 Questions First
Health history, first meals, a safe room and alone-time training: your new-cat checklist.

Bringing a cat home is a big, happy step. A few smart questions before adoption day will make the transition smoother for everyone, especially your new roommate.
1. What is their health and behavior history?
Ask about parasite treatment, vaccines, microchip, neutering and any meds. Book a local vet visit soon after adoption and consider pet insurance. Ask about energy level and how they get on with kids and other pets.
2. What should they eat at first?
Find out the current food and schedule and keep it the same at first. If you switch, wait about a week, then blend in the new food gradually.
3. How should I set up their space?
Start with one quiet room and open up the house slowly. Secure windows, keep doors closed early on and offer hiding spots like a box on its side or an open carrier.
4. How do I help them handle alone time?
Begin with short separations paired with toys or treats, and keep comings and goings calm. If you see signs of severe stress, talk to your vet or a behavior professional.
