My Dog Ate a Grape! Here Is Exactly What to Do

No amount of grapes or raisins is proven safe. Call your vet right away, even if your dog seems fine.

My Dog Ate a Grape! Here Is Exactly What to Do

Grapes and raisins are one of the most important foods to keep away from dogs. If your dog has eaten even one, treat it as urgent.

Act fast

  • Call your vet or a pet poison helpline immediately, even if your dog seems totally normal.
  • Do not try to make your dog vomit at home, and do not use hydrogen peroxide. Let the vet decide.
  • Vomiting or diarrhea can start within 6 to 12 hours, while kidney damage can develop over 1 to 3 days, quietly.

What treatment looks like

Vets usually decontaminate, then hospitalize with IV fluids for at least 48 hours and recheck kidney bloodwork over a few days.

Good to know

  • Tartaric acid is the likely toxic component. Raisins, sultanas, currants and cream of tartar carry similar risks.
  • Seedless, green and specialty grapes are not any safer.
  • Keep trail mix, raisin bread and fruit bowls out of reach, and save the ASPCA and Pet Poison Helpline numbers in your phone.
